BK legal consultant Gina Tumlos and communications and research officer Marco Zaplan attended a technical workshop on campaign finance organized by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) held at the Bayleaf Intramors Manila from April 27-29, 2016. The workshop titled “Investigative Reporting Seminar on Scrutinizing Electoral Campaign Spending in the Philippines” was attended by no less than 20 representatives from various civil society organizations. Speakers during the workshop include PCIJ Executive Director Malou Mangahas, De La Salle University Professor Ronald Holmes, COMELEC Campaign Finance Office Head Atty. Sonia Bea Wee-Lozada, and PCIJ Training Director Floreen Simon. Bantay Kita has been running an online awareness campaign on the issue with emphasis on the COMELEC’s resolution prohibiting extractive companies from contributing election funds to candidates. In 2013, PCIJ released an article revealing the donation of some of the biggest mining magnates in the Philippines including the Zamoras to the electoral bid of some national candidates during the 2013 elections.
