A discussion to rethink mining in the Philippines was organized by the Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI) last June 22, 2015 where Bantay Kita’s Ms. Tina Pimentel served as resource person. Ms. Pimentel talked about the three pending mining fiscal bills filed in Congress. These are Rep. Romeo Quimbo’s HB 5367, Rep. Silvestre Bello and Rep. Lino Cayetano’s HB 3586, and Rep. Carlos Padilla’s HB 5843.
The discussion focused on the different approaches of three bills towards enhancing fiscal reforms in the mining industry Ms. Pimentel mentioned the unique features of the Cong. Padilla’s HB 5843 which includes the creation of an independent office for the Philippine Extractive Industry and Transparency Initiative, exemption from confidentiality clauses of mining companies, among others. The conference was held in Quezon City and was attended by thirty participants coming from PMPI’s network of organizations.
