BK, represented by its comms and research officer Marco Zaplan, participated in the recently held Data Extractors Workshop II in Harare, Zimbabwe last May 24-26, 2016. The second Data Extractors workshop is the second and final installment of workshops under the Data Extractors Program of which Bantay Kita, along with ten other PWYP national coalitions, is a part of.
The workshop aims to present and analysis recently disclosed data especially from the EU-mandated disclosures and also expand data skills of the twelve Data Extractors. Some of the sessions included presentations from Joe Williams and David Mihalyi of NRGI, Paul Dziedzic and Anton Ruhling of OpenOil, Yuandra Ismiraldi of School of Data, and Jed Miller, a digital strategist. Mr. Zaplan delivered a short session on data visualization in parallel with sessions by Jana Morgan of PWYP USA, Dewi Andini of PWYP Indonesia, and Mukasiri Sibanda of PWYP Zimbabwe. The workshop culminated with each Data Extractor refining and presenting their projects for their respective coalitions. Bantay Kita proposed its Datadvocacy Initiative which consists of workshops and a data portal. The Data Extractors program is a one-year program of Publish What You Pay which aims to extract data and make use of disclosures for greater transparency and accountability in the extractive industries.
